I-70 / Glenwood Canyon Returned to Original Traffic Formation Today

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will re-open the westbound lanes of Glenwood Canyon today, Tuesday, Oct. 20 from mile point 117-126. Striping operations have been completed in the westbound lanes allowing crews to dismantle the traffic control out of the head to head formation it has been in since July.  Both eastbound and westbound lanes will still experience some single lane closures for work to be completed.

“This is a huge milestone,” said CDOT project engineer Adam Cornely. “This project is essential to the long-term health and safety of the highway, and returning traffic to its original formation marks the final phase of work.”

TRAFFIC IMPACTS: The original scope of work planned for the project will be completed by Oct. 31; however three weeks of additional work have been added. This work includes replacing two bearing pads on eastbound I-70 west of Hanging Lake Tunnel, and repairing a barrier wall that was damaged during a rockslide in June. The new work will be completed under single lane closures in the original traffic formation, and is now planned for completion Friday, November 20.

Normal work hours are Monday through Friday during daylight hours. Some night and weekend work is anticipated. There is a 24/7 wide-load restriction of 10 feet, which will remain in place through the end of this week. From Oct. 23 through Nov. 20 there will be a 12-foot width restriction in place.

This work is part of a $7.3 million project, which was awarded to Truesdell Corporation. The state-of-the-art polyester concrete overlay completed in the westbound lanes functions as a waterproof barrier, preventing corrosion between the concrete and the bridge deck. This effectively extends the lifespan of the highway and will reduce the frequency of repairs and impacts to travelers. In addition to bridge deck repair, the project includes 3,000 linear feet of bridge rail replacement, and construction of a rock fall fence to mitigate the risk of falling rocks.

CDOT would like to remind motorists to Slow for the Cone Zone. Fines will be doubled within the work zone. If you have questions or concerns about this project, please call the project hotline at 970-930-8009 or email i70glenwood@PublicInfoTeam.com.

PLAY SYNOPSIS:

The place is a communal residence in a New England city, where four mentally handicapped men live under the supervision of an earnest, but increasingly "burned out" young social worker named Jack. Norman, who works in a doughnut shop and is unable to resist the lure of the sweet pastries, takes great pride in the huge bundle of keys that dangles from his waist; Lucien P. Smith has the mind of a five-year-old but imagines that he is able to read and comprehend the weighty books he lugs about; Arnold, the ringleader of the group, is a hyperactive, compulsive chatterer, who suffers from deep-seated insecurities and a persecution complex; while Barry, a brilliant schizophrenic who is devastated by the unfeeling rejection of his brutal father, fantasizes that he is a golf pro. Mingled with scenes from the daily lives of these four, where "little things" sometimes become momentous (and often very funny), are moments of great poignancy when, with touching effectiveness, we are reminded that the handicapped, like the rest of us, want only to love and laugh and find some meaning and purpose in the brief time that they, like their more fortunate brothers, are allotted on this earth.

GarCo Sheriff's Office Reports Mail Thefts

Mail Theft in Garfield County: GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo. – September 24, 2015, 10:50 AM

There have been several mail thefts recently in Garfield County. The thefts have occurred in areas from western Garfield County through Glenwood Springs and Carbondale and along the Roaring Fork Valley into Pitkin County.

The thieves are not necessarily limited in their targets they have targeted rural mailboxes, banks of “secure” mailboxes that serve neighborhoods, private mail boxes as well as mail collection boxes.

Keep yourself safe. Check and empty your personal mail box daily and as soon after the mail deliverer brings your mail as possible. If you aren’t at home consider having a neighbor check your mail. Do not mail your outgoing mail through your personal mail box and whenever possible hand your outgoing mail directly to the passing mail deliverer or mail it at your local Post Office.

The preferred mail point for your outgoing mail is always the Post Office. You may want to consider having a PO Box for the receipt of your personal mail that may contain sensitive information.

The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office and local law enforcement officers encourage you to avoid being a target of these thefts. Loss of mail is not only inconvenient; it can lead to financial losses and identity theft by compromising your personal information.

No further information will be released.

IMPORTANT: Please direct any media requests to the contact above. Do not contact the Garfield County Emergency Communications Center or Patrol staff for media requests.

The mission of the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office is to provide solutions for the people through

professional, ethical and compassionate conduct.

Firefighters planning prescribed burns in Garfield & Eagle Counties

SILT, Colo. – Firefighters from the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Unit are planning prescribed fires in Eagle and Garfield counties this fall if conditions warrant. Burning could begin as early as this week.

The 200-acre Sheep Gulch Prescribed Fire is planned four miles northwest of Gypsum in Eagle County to reduce hazardous fuels and improve sagebrush communities. Smoke may be seen from the Eagle River corridor and Town of Gypsum.

In Garfield County, the 160-acre Roan Plateau Prescribed Fire is planned on the Roan Plateau north of Rifle in the East Fork Drainage of Parachute Creek to help restore aspen. Smoke may be seen from the Roan Plateau, Rifle and the I-70 corridor.

“We will only ignite these prescribed fires if conditions are ideal for safe, effective burns, as well as for good smoke dispersal away from area communities,” said Rusty Stark, fuels specialist for the Bureau of Land Management Colorado River Valley Field Office.

Fire managers have developed a detailed prescribed fire plan and obtained smoke permits from the State of Colorado for each of the planned burns.

Anyone with health conditions that may be affected by short durations of smoke should contact Rusty Stark at (970) 876-9030. Prescribed fire smoke may affect your health. For more information, see https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/cdphe/wood-smoke-and-health.

Intermittent Closures of I-70, Wednesday, September 23rd & Tuesday, September 29th

GARFIELD COUNTY/GLENWOOD CANYON— The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has announced that  there will be intermittent closures of Interstate 70 between Grizzly Creek, Mile Marker (MM) 121, and Hanging Lake Tunnel (MM 125), on Wednesday, September 23rd, and Tuesday, September 29th, for helicopter operations in Glenwood Canyon. CDOT anticipates between five and seven stops per day, each lasting less than 20 minutes.  These stops will occur approximately every hour beginning shortly after 8a.m. Stops will include pedestrian stops along the Glenwood Canyon bike path.

“This is one of the last major hurdles we face in completing this project on time,” Adam Cornely, CDOT project engineer, said. “A helicopter will be lifting 1,200lbs of rockfall fencing materials into place between 100 ft. and 400 ft. above the roadway. Helicopter operations can be delicate in nature, so closing the road intermittently strikes the best balance between safety and keeping traffic moving.”

Crews are making every effort to minimize impacts to traffic. These short stops will take place a maximum of once per hour, and begin at 8 a.m. in an attempt to maximize the helicopters production during peak weather conditions.  All helicopter operations are extremely weather dependent, and may require additional stops and days for helicopter work.

Drivers are asked to be aware that the helicopter will be operating in Glenwood Canyon several hundred feet above the roadway.  During these times, traffic will remain open. CDOT advises drivers to remain focused on the road and follow all traffic regulations in the work zone.

Stops on the Interstate will only be performed when the helicopter lands, primarily for refueling.  These stops will occur a safe distance away from the landing zone.

Drivers accessing the live westbound lane between Grizzly Creek (MM 121) and Shoshone (MM 123), not mainline Interstate 70, are to expect a greater amount of stops through the days the helicopter is operating.  Given the closer proximity of the westbound lane to helicopter operations a greater amount of stops may be required.

This work is part of a $7.3 million project, which was awarded to Truesdell Corporation. In addition to rock fall fence replacements, the project includes bridge rail, and bridge deck repairs.

Normal work hours are Monday through Friday during daylight hours. Some night and weekend work is anticipated. There is a 24-7 wide-load restriction of 10 feet, which will remain in place through October.

CDOT would like to remind motorists to Slow for the Cone Zone. Fines will be doubled within the work zone. If you have questions or concerns about this project, please call the project hotline at 970-930-8009 or email i70glenwood@PublicInfoTeam.com.
